The problem it solves
Receiving is where discrepancies are cheapest to catch and most often missed. Once a pallet is broken down and put away, a shortfall stops being the supplier's problem and quietly becomes yours.
Manual receiving forces a choice between speed and accuracy. Count every carton properly and the dock backs up; wave it through and you accept whatever the paperwork claims. Most operations pick speed, discover the gap at stock-take, and by then there is no way to attribute it.
A dock portal removes the choice. Cartons read as the pallet passes through, matched against the advance shipping notice and the purchase order automatically. Discrepancies raise at the door, while the driver is still there. Over months, the same data becomes a supplier scorecard built on what arrived rather than what was invoiced.

What to plan for
Every module has a failure mode. These are the ones that actually bite on this one, and what we do about them — because finding out later costs more than knowing now.
- ASN data quality is entirely outside your control and is usually the weak link.
- A supplier onboarding kit with a defined file format, plus tolerance thresholds so minor variance does not stop the dock. Suppliers who cannot send an ASN start on manual PO matching.

What if our suppliers will not tag at source?
You tag at receiving instead. The reconciliation and scorecard still work; you just carry the tagging labour. It is common to start that way and move suppliers to source tagging one at a time as the relationship allows.
How complete is a single-pass pallet read?
On cartoned goods, high. On dense metal or liquid loads it needs design work — antenna count, power and pallet orientation are all decided at the survey rather than assumed.
Does this replace our WMS?
No. It feeds it. The portal produces a verified receipt event; your WMS still owns putaway, locations and picking.
