The problem it solves
Inventory accuracy in most Bangladeshi retail sits somewhere between sixty-five and eighty percent. Nobody quotes that number out loud, because the moment you do, every decision built on top of it comes into question.
That is what an annual stock-take buys you: one accurate day a year, degrading from the moment it finishes. Everything downstream — replenishment, allocation, the promise your website makes about availability — inherits the error and compounds it.
Item-level RFID changes the economics of counting. A full-store count stops being a night shift and a closure and becomes a twenty-minute walk with a handheld, which means it can happen weekly. Once the number is trustworthy, replenishment can be automated against it: reorder points fire on real stock, pick lists generate themselves, and the size that sells out on Thursday is back on the rail Friday.
The workflow
Four steps, in this order. A step out of sequence is a broken process, not a variation.

Cartons read at the stockroom door or dock. What arrived is reconciled against what was ordered before it reaches a shelf.

A handheld sweep updates floor and stockroom positions. Weekly is realistic; daily on high-velocity categories is common.

Reorder rules run against real counts. Out-of-stock risk raises an alert before the gap appears on the rail, not after.

Replenish
Pick lists generate for the stockroom, or purchase orders post to the ERP automatically, depending on how far you want the automation to go.

What to plan for
Every module has a failure mode. These are the ones that actually bite on this one, and what we do about them — because finding out later costs more than knowing now.
- Tag cost undermines the case on low-margin SKUs.
- Segment by margin and velocity, serialise only what pays back, and push tagging to source so the cost lands where the labour is cheapest.
- Metal and liquid attenuate UHF, so cosmetics and boxed electronics read badly on a naive design.
- Metal-mount tags specified per product category during the survey rather than one inlay ordered for the whole estate.

How accurate is a handheld count in practice?
Well-tagged apparel reads at 98% or better per pass. The variable is not the reader, it is tagging discipline — items that were never tagged cannot be counted, and that is where most disappointing pilots actually fail.
Can we start without touching the ERP?
Yes. Counting and variance reporting stand alone and prove the accuracy case on their own. Automated reorder is the second phase, once you trust the number enough to let it place orders.
Do we still need EAS gates?
Usually yes — they answer different questions. RFID tells you what you have; EAS tells you what is leaving unpaid. Dual-function labels let one tagging step serve both, which is normally cheaper than running two tag estates.
