Electronic Shelf Labels

E-ink price labels that update from your POS — one price change, every shelf, in seconds.

Overview

The problem it solves

A price change should take one action, not an afternoon. Electronic shelf labels — the system RATS BD has sold as EPL since before the term settled — put an e-ink display on the shelf edge and let your own system drive what it says.

The manual version of this job is expensive in ways that do not show up on an invoice. Someone prints tags, walks the aisles, peels and replaces, and misses a few. The shelf then disagrees with the till, which is the single most common cause of a queue argument and a refunded sale. In a chain, multiply that by every branch and every promotion.

With shelf labels, the price lives in one place — your POS or inventory system — and the shelf is a display of it. Change it centrally and the label redraws in seconds. The screens are e-ink, the same technology as an e-reader: crisp, no glare under bright retail lighting, and readable from an angle. Because they only draw power when the content changes, a label typically runs about five years before its battery is touched.

RATS BD surveys the floor first: aisle count, label sizes per fixture, where base stations go so every label stays in range, and how the feed comes out of your existing system. The answer is a fixture-by-fixture count, not a per-store guess.

Capabilities

What the system does

Specified per store — not a catalogue page read back at you.

  • 01

    Central price control

Change a price in your system and it propagates to every branch that stocks the item. No printing, no walking the aisle, no shelf that disagrees with the till.

  • 02

    E-ink, not LCD

Crisp and glare-free under retail lighting, readable off-axis, and unlit — which is why a label lasts years on one battery instead of weeks.

  • 03

Works with the system you already run

The labels sync with your existing POS or inventory software. Nothing is replaced; a feed is connected.

  • 04

    More than a price

Product name, barcode, unit price, promotion dates or a QR code — whatever the fixture needs to carry.

  • 05

    Scales with the estate

The same system covers a 200-line convenience store and a 20,000-line hypermarket, one branch or twenty.

Hardware

What we supply

E-ink shelf labels
Common shelf-edge sizes for grocery, pharmacy and electronics fixtures, in black/white/red.
Base stations
Ceiling-mounted transmitters that keep every label in range across the sales floor.
Fixture rails and clips
Mounting to suit gondola, hook, freezer and glass-shelf fixtures.
POS integration
The feed from your existing till or ERP, mapped item by item at commissioning.

Model availability moves with the market — we confirm exactly what is in stock, and what it will cost to run, when we quote.

Best for

Where it earns its keep

  • Grocery and hypermarkets where prices move daily
  • Chains running frequent multi-branch promotions
  • Pharmacy and electronics floors with long, dense line counts
  • Any store where shelf-to-till price mismatches cause disputes

Questions

Before you
buy

The things retail managers actually ask us on the first call.

Do we have to replace our POS?

No. The labels take a feed from what you already run. The integration work is mapping your item codes to labels once, at commissioning.

How long do the batteries last?

Most labels run about five years in normal retail use, because an e-ink screen only draws power at the moment it changes. Labels on a fixture that updates several times a day will sit at the shorter end of that.

What happens if the network drops?

The label keeps displaying the last price it received — it is a screen holding an image, not a live feed. It redraws when the link returns.

Can we start with one aisle?

Yes, and we usually recommend it. One aisle proves the workflow with your own staff and your own price file before you commit to the floor.
